The Need don’t do pastiches of x, y or z, they do pastiches. They throw together a bunch of different genres and it is this throwing together that is the important thing. But, if you must, you could say they are circus music in the most literal sense: music played by outsiders who bring the overworldly to the ordinary people.

Download.

More music recommendations at the perceptron

If you’d like some music recommendations that suit your taste, rather than mine, go to the perceptron and enter an artist you like.

Modest Mouse, Life Like Weeds

This song smashes forwards, stamps slowly, waltzes itself around the room barging the other dancers out of the way.
The combination of strings and electronics is not a new idea. However, Aaron Funk makes such a perfect blend that it sounds like he and his laptop are the fifth and sixth members of a string quartet. The classical sounds and single vocal sample he uses expand the breakcore emotional range past terror and confusion to melancholy and regret and hopelessness. Get the whole album, as the tracks work even better together.

Download.

The Black Heart Procession, On Ships Of Gold

This song is a forty-five minute recording of a semi-improvised cover of some Schubert piano minatures. It’s so terribly mournful.

Download.

Delta Dart, Story Of My Life

Erin of Delta Dart would write the skeleton of a song and teach it to her bandmates. Each of them would go away and work out their own version. Then, the band would re-group and combine their interpretations. Mostly, this resulted in achingly sad, harmonised melodies.

Download.

Dear And The Headlights, Grace Dear And The Headlights are...

Dear And The Headlights, Grace

Dear And The Headlights are probably the best pop band ever. Better than Abba. Why? Because they have what seems to be an inexhaustible supply of beautiful melodies. They occasionally sprinkle in little innovative bonuses, like Grace’s unexpected upward melodic twist.

Download.

Love Lost But Not Forgotten, Means To No End Love Lost But...

Love Lost But Not Forgotten, Means To No End

Love Lost But Not Forgotten were basically Converge. They make symphonic hardcore. That is, hardcore that is not just a collection of songs, but a journey. I was loathe to actually post a track here because, by doing so, I am negating their great achievement. However, In The Nervous Light Of Sunday is the representative microcosm of the larger cosmos.

Download.

Tim Holehouse, Vessels That Sail In The Night
